Coordinating lecturer Dr Angela Roothaan writes: “I am pleased to let you know that once more, in January, I will be offering a VU graduate wintercourse. This year’s course is titled: ‘African Philosophy in Global Times: Knowledge and Culture’ and will be taught together with colleagues from several African and Dutch universities”. This intensive course “is intended for Masters and PhD students – so if this applies to you, be invited to apply, and in all other instances please pass it on to those students you know for whom the course can be interesting and/or a regular part of their training plan. Or, of course, to other colleagues who might have such students!”

We live in a time of increasing contact between different cultures. The opportunities, as well as the problems this brings are traceable in all academic disciplines, but especially in the social sciences and in the humanities. This course aims to guide you to a deeper reflection on the historical conditions of intercultural encounters, the philosophical conditions of intercultural dialogue, and the framework of post-coloniality that determines the need to politically negotiate the conditions of such a dialogue – all from an African perspective
