‘From the object body to the embodied mind’

Being a body or having a body? From this question arises the meditation on the body initiated by phenomenology, a meditation intertwined with psychology at first and later with psychoanalysis. The thought of the body, the genitive of which is at the core of many philosophical debates, is perhaps one of the most controversial themes, not only in contemporary international philosophy, but also in the fields of neuroscience, psychology and the philosophy of biology, which become more and more involved into this debate in order to provide different interpretations of what is considered to be the subject par excellence of the psyche (Freud). Contemporary approaches to the body have brought into discussion a certain way of conceiving this “object”, starting from the question about the cartesian legacy of the two substances, which is at the foundation of a certain way of interpreting the mind-body issue in contemporary neuroscience, as well as by those engaged in clinical practice. The paradigm shift from the object body (as Körper, to use Husserl’s words) to the more recent theories of embodiment shows how this shift is a harbinger of new hypotheses in the applied sciences. Furthermore, the issue of the body opens the path to meditations on subjectivity and intersubjectivity, on their disturbances, on corporeality and the relationship with the environment, movement, etc.
