Workshop of the DFG Emmy-Noether Project ‘A Sensible World’
The Phenomenology of Secondary Qualities
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 16-17 November 2023
This workshop aims to explore the topic of the phenomenology of secondary qualities. It will address questions about the distinction between primary and secondary qualities, the qualitative nature of sensory content, the objectivity of appearances, and the distinction between appearing vs. constant sensory qualities, among others. The specificity of the workshop is that it will bring together scholars specialized either in the history of philosophy, more precisely in early phenomenology, or in contemporary analytic philosophy. These two traditions both developed fine-grained theories on secondary qualities, but are too rarely put in dialogue, what this workshop will contribute to change.
