The British Society for Phenomenology is a not-for-profit organisation set up with the intention of promoting research and awareness in the field of phenomenology and other related aspects of philosophical thought. Currently, the society accomplishes these aims through its journal, essay prize, events, and podcast.
The Journal of the British Society of Phenomenology (JBSP) is one of the longest standing phenomenological publications in the world. The journal publishes papers on phenomenology and existential philosophy as well as contributions from other fields of philosophy engaging with topics in the tradition of phenomenology. The journal also convenes the Wolfe Mays Essay Prize on a recurrent basis, awarded to an outstanding submission addressing a specially set topic. The competition is open to PhD students and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) who are members of the BSP. The prize is named in honour of Wolfe Mays, who founded the BSP in 1967 and the JBSP soon after, remaining the journal’s editor until his death in 2005.
BSP Events provide a friendly and supportive forum for inter-disciplinary discussion. Our Annual Conference seeks to explore the interface between the theory and history of phenomenology and its practice by academics and practitioners of many fields. Over the years we have welcomed papers from respected names in academia and from those applying phenomenological methods in practical fields as diverse as medicine, policing, and law. Each year, we seek to provide a space for some 30-60 speakers via an open call for papers, and invite noted experts as keynotes. Many of the conference papers are recorded and shared through the BSP Podcast. More recently the BSP has launched the recurring International Symposium and Online Course events. The Symposium is intended to foster closer links between phenomenologists working in the UK and across the world, offering a platform through which to spotlight areas of excellence and innovation at a different host institution or country. Online Courses focus on phenomenological thinkers or topics, are taught by experts in the field usually over four weekly sessions, and run three times a year.
Finally, the BSP also curates a newsfeed and social channels sharing information on phenomenology activities – events, calls for papers, new publications, and so on – from all around the world.
