CALL FOR ABSTRACTS:
Stein and Scheler in Dialogue
May 25-25, 2023
Location: St. Paul, Minnesota USA
Deadline to submit abstract: February 24, 2023
Notification by: March 17, 2023
The philosophy department along with the Dougherty Family College of the University of St. Thomas (MN) invite members of the international community to submit proposals for the conference, “Stein and Scheler in Dialogue.” This conference is also sponsored by the Max Scheler Society of North America (MSSNA), the North American Society for Early Phenomenology (NASEP), and the International Association for the Study of the Philosophy of Edith Stein (IASPES).
The lives and works of Edith Stein and Max Scheler share much in common. Both of Jewish descent, they were outspoken opponents of the rise of antisemitism in interwar Germany. They were each important members of the phenomenological movement in the earliest years of the twentieth century. Both have detailed accounts of the nature of intersubjectivity and of objective value. Both are widely considered important ‘personalist’ philosophers. And yet, there is little scholarly research dedicated to the relationship between their thought. The aim of this conference is to place the work of Edith Stein and Max Scheler into dialogue with one another. The organisers welcome submissions pertaining to any and all aspects of their work. Proposals discussing the work of both Stein and Scheler will be given priority.
Participants will have at least 35 minutes to present their work, and a discussion will follow. In order to maximize intellectual community and individual feedback, we will not run concurrent sessions.
Please submit an abstract of at least 500 words. Please prepare abstracts for blind review and submit a separate submission title sheet with all your contact details. Submissions should be sent electronically to Dr. Timothy Burns ([email protected]) and Dr. Zachary Davis ([email protected]). The deadline for submission is February 24, 2023. Notification of acceptance will be sent out no later than March 17, 2023.
The conference organizers intend to pursue the publication of an edited volume based on the conference following a rigorous peer-review process.
