Ego, Subject, Individual: Phenomenological Variations
Edited by Gualtiero Lorini (University of Verona)
Submission deadlines: July 31, 2025 (Title & Abstract); November 30, 2025 (Text)
This special issue aims to investigate the different forms in which phenomenology has dealt with the problem of individuality — a concept whose very nature is more and more under investigation in contemporary philosophical debate at present. The approach to this topic is problematic since the phenomenological attitude aspires to disentangle individuality not only from the idealistic characterizations that have led to the concept of “subject” within classical metaphysics, but also from the restrictive conceptions that have resulted into the search for an “essence” of the human being. This is what occurred, for example, in the thorny dialogue between psychology and philosophical anthropology in the early twentieth century. The urgency of reflecting on these topics is witnessed by the growing tendency of contemporary phenomenology to hybridize with “practical” knowledge, in particular the social and cognitive sciences. The perspective of the first singular person from which phenomenology starts allows for the development of issues — such as empathy and emotional sharing, for instance — that are increasingly present in the current philosophical landscape as crucial access keys to define a reason whose polymorphic nature demands to be explored.
