The German Society for Phenomenological Research was founded in 1969. Its purpose is to promote philosophical research, especially of the phenomenological kind. The most important activities of the society are the organization of conferences and workshops, awarding prizes for both junior and senior scholars, and the publication of a scientific journal.

The societies primary publication is the journal Phänomenologische Forschungen / Phenomenological Studies / Recherches Phénoménologiques, which publishes articles in English, French, and German. In addition, young scholars associated with the society operate the blog “et al.”.

Since 1971, the society has organised an international conference at regular intervals, usually every two years. The next conference will take place from 24-27 September 2025 at the TU Darmstadt on the topic of ‘Crisis and Critique’. Submissions for section presentations are possible until the end of March.

Since 2014, the DGPF has awarded the Husserl Lecture every other year to a scholar who has made an exceptional contribution to phenomenology through their research achievements. The lecture takes place at changing locations which are relevant to the current landscape of phenomenological research within the German-speaking countries. The promotion of young researchers also plays a major role at the DGPF. Since 2015, the society has been announcing an award question on current scientific and social issues. The prize, which is primarily aimed at young researchers, is awarded by an independent jury. The winning essay is published in the society’s journal. Since 2018, the society has organised a spring school at regular intervals at changing locations, which is aimed specifically at researchers at early stages of their careers.
